Pay Per Click Advertising
The search engines, like Google, and Yahoo, provide paid placement advertising at the top and right hand sides of their results pages. The following example is what shows on Google, when doing a search for "pizza" initiated on a computer in Denver, Colorado.
So, these results come from Jim's Fabulous Pizza, and from CiCi's Pizza Buffet paying a certain bid amount to land them in 2nd position. There were 5 more results under these.
Advertisers Determine Costs
How do they determine cost per click? You determine how much a certain keyword or keyphrase is worth to attract customers, and place that bid on that keyphrase. The search engine displays ads in the order of highest bid to lowest.
That is an oversimplification, however. They also determine ads by how much budget is left in the advertisers campaign, how much was allocated for 30 days, and Click Through Rate, or CTR, and geography.
